MESH TYPES

Standard Diamond

45° diamond aperture — the most specified grade for hospitality and architectural screens. Balances open area with structural rigidity across the widest sheet sizes.

65–75% openHotel lobbies, facadesUp to 3,000mm

Hexagonal

Six-sided cells deliver higher open area with lower visual weight than diamond. The geometry reads as architectural detail at close range and dissolves to transparency at distance.

70–80% openRetail ceilings, facadesUp to 2,500mm

Micro \/ Fine

Tight 2–4mm cells create near-solid visual privacy while still passing air and diffuse light. Reads as a solid plane from normal viewing distance.

35–45% openPartitions, privacy screensUp to 1,800mm

Raised Flat

Diamond raised then cold-flattened gives a rigid, smooth-faced sheet with even finish. The structural grade for balustrades, stair infill panels, and load-bearing applications.

70–80% openBalustrades, stair infillUp to 3,000mm

Standard strand widths run 1.5mm–6mm. Wider strands increase structural rigidity; narrower strands maximise the open area percentage.

Mill finish, powder coat (RAL palette), anodised aluminium, or hot-dip galvanised for exterior use.

Yes — hexagonal mesh bends across one axis more readily than diamond. Minimum bend radius depends on strand gauge and aperture size.

We can laminate 25–50mm acoustic foam or mineral wool behind the mesh panel before framing. Typical NRC improvement: 0.4–0.7.

Yes — when framed in a compliant balustrade system and using the correct gauge (3mm+ strand residential, 5mm+ commercial). We supply structural calculations on request.

EXPANDED METAL FAQ

Questions About Your Expanded Metal Project

Pricing for expanded metal panels varies significantly based on material thickness (typically 1.0–3.0 mm), pattern (SWD/LWD), panel size, and finish. These ranges reflect Foshan export pricing for commercial architectural volumes (hotel lobbies, facades, ceilings) and include basic fabrication but exclude shipping, framing, or installation. Custom patterns or heavy gauges increase costs by 20–40%.

MaterialFinishPrice Range (USD/sqm)Notes
Aluminum (3003/5052)Powder coat10–25Most common for interiors/facades
Aluminum (3003/5052)Anodized (clear or color)15–35Enhanced UV and scratch resistance
Aluminum (3003/5052)PVD (titanium coating)25–50Premium metallic finishes
304 Stainless SteelMill / brushed18–40Interior or mild exterior
304 Stainless SteelPowder coat or PVD25–55Added for color or extra durability
316 Stainless SteelMill / brushed25–60Marine/coastal premium
  • Pricing drops 15–25% for standard patterns and orders over 500 sqm.
  • MOQ pricing assumes minimum 100 sqm; smaller runs add 30–50% premium.
  • All prices are FOB China; factor 10–20% for international freight and duties.

Material choice directly impacts long-term durability in different climates. Salt spray testing (ASTM B117) and real-world exposure data provide clear benchmarks for hotel lobbies, exterior facades, and coastal projects.

MaterialSalt Spray Hours (typical)Real Environment PerformanceBest Applications
Aluminum (anodized or powder-coated)1,000–2,000 hoursExcellent in urban/mild coastal; 10–15 years before recoat in high humidityInterior partitions, non-marine facades
304 Stainless Steel500–1,000 hoursGood in inland/industrial; pitting risk in salt air after 5–10 yearsInterior or protected exterior
316 Stainless Steel1,000–2,000+ hoursSuperior in coastal/marine; 20+ years with minimal maintenanceExterior facades, high-humidity, saltwater exposure
  • Aluminum relies on protective finishes; once breached, it corrodes faster than stainless.
  • 304 SS offers good general corrosion resistance but is vulnerable to chlorides.
  • 316 SS contains 2–3% molybdenum, dramatically improving pitting resistance in salt-laden air.
  • Caveat: All materials perform best when properly framed to avoid water pooling; regular cleaning extends service life in all environments.

Open area percentage (the proportion of empty space in the panel) is one of the most frequently requested specifications because it controls light transmission, ventilation, privacy, and shading while directly affecting panel stiffness.

Open Area %Typical Pattern CharacteristicsStructural ImpactVisual / Functional Tradeoffs
30–50%Smaller SWD/LWD, wider strandsHighest rigidity and load-bearing; minimal deflectionGreater opacity/privacy; reduced airflow/light
50–70%Balanced diamond patterns (most common)Good strength-to-weight; suitable for most facades/ceilingsOptimal balance of visibility, ventilation, and shade
70–85%+Larger openings, narrower strandsLower stiffness; requires denser framing or thicker gaugeMaximum light/ventilation; more transparent appearance
  • Higher open area increases airflow and daylight but reduces panel strength, often necessitating additional support frames or heavier base gauges.
  • Lower open area provides better privacy and solar shading but can restrict ventilation and increase material weight/cost.
  • Typical architectural sweet spot: 55–65% open area for most facade and ceiling applications.

Standard sheet sizes minimize cost and lead time, while custom panels are fabricated to exact project dimensions for seamless installation.

CategoryDimensions (mm)Typical UseMOQ (sqm)
Standard sheets1,220 × 2,440 (4×8 ft) or 1,500 × 3,000Stock patterns for quick prototypes50–100
Custom panelsUp to 1,500 × 4,000 or larger (framed)Architect-specified facades, ceilings, balustrades100–200
  • Standard sizes are cut from mill sheets with minimal waste; custom requires dedicated tooling/setup.
  • MOQ for powder-coated or anodized custom runs is typically 100 sqm; PVD or specialty finishes may require 200 sqm.
  • Smaller prototype orders (under 50 sqm) are possible at 30–50% premium.

Lead times depend on pattern complexity, finish type, and current factory load but follow predictable industry benchmarks for architectural projects.

ItemStandard Lead TimeWith Custom Pattern or Premium Finish
Sample panel (1–2 pcs)10–20 days15–25 days
Bulk production (100+ sqm)25–40 days35–60 days
  • Samples include 2–3 finish options and are shipped via air freight for fast approval.
  • Bulk orders include full QC documentation, material certifications, and packing for sea freight.
  • Expedited options can shave 7–10 days but add 15–20% to cost.

Proper installation ensures structural integrity, alignment, and long-term performance. Most architects specify framed systems for ease of mounting and future maintenance.

  • Facade cladding: Panels are mounted on extruded aluminum sub-frames using Z-clips, hook-on systems, or concealed brackets; fixed with stainless steel fasteners; designed with 10–20 mm joints for thermal expansion.
  • Ceilings: Suspended on T-bar grids, lay-in framed panels, or swing-down access frames; must maintain minimum open area for sprinkler compliance; often combined with acoustic backing.
  • Interior partitions and balustrades: Framed into steel or aluminum extrusions, bolted or welded to posts; tempered glass infills optional for hybrid designs.

All methods require coordination with structural engineers for wind loads (facades) and seismic requirements where applicable.

Each grade balances weight, cost, strength, and environmental resistance. Selection is driven by exposure, budget, and maintenance expectations.

GradeWeight (kg/sqm, 2 mm thick)Relative CostKey AdvantagesLimitations
Aluminum (3003/5052)4–6LowestLightweight, easy to form/anodize, excellent for curved designsRequires protective finish in harsh exteriors
304 Stainless Steel12–16MediumHigh strength, good general corrosion resistance, modern brushed lookPitting risk in coastal or de-icing salt environments
316 Stainless Steel12–16HighestSuperior chloride resistance, longest service life outdoorsHeavier and more expensive
  • Choose aluminum for interior or protected exterior where weight and cost matter most.
  • Use 304 SS for general commercial interiors and mild-climate facades.
  • Specify 316 SS for coastal hotels, marine-adjacent projects, or high-humidity atriums.
